Staff Sergeant Terry Rae Sumey (Retired), 62, passed away Tuesday, April 13, 2021 in his home, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Terry was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, to the late Leonard E. Sumey, Sr. and Marilyn Brink. He loved football and was a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers Fan. Taking pictures, painting cars, feeding squirrels and helping people are the things Terry enjoyed. Terry had a love for trains and had them built around his home. But his first love was cooking.
Terry proudly enlisted in the United States Army on October 21, 1986 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
During his enlistment, he received an Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement Metal, National Defense Service Metal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with Two Bronze Service Stars and a Humanitarian Service Medal. Also, during his enlistment, SSG Sumey completed a Basic Non-Commission Officer Course, Bus Driver Course, Combat Life Savers Course and a Leadership Development Course. After his enlistment, SSG Sumey received an Associate Degree.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Jesenia Sumey of Fayetteville, North Carolina; two sons, Terry M. Sumey of Fayetteville, North Carolina and Scott Sumey of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; a daughter, April Sumey of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; one brother, Leonard Sumey, Jr. of Lancaster, Pennsylvania and his wife Pattie; three sisters, Cathy Lewis, Kellie Savage and her husband Harry both of Union Town, Pennsylvania, Patricia Shroyer and her husband Charles of Dunbar, Pennsylvania; 4 grandchildren; a special childhood friend, Anthony Kostandinu of Arkansas and a host of nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
To celebrate the life of SSG Terry Rae Sumey, a viewing will be held Tuesday, April 20, 2021, 7PM-9PM at LaFayette Funeral Home, 6651 Raeford Road, Fayetteville, North Carolina 28304.
Graveside Service will be held Wednesday, April 21, 2021, 9AM at Sandhills State Veteran Cemetery, 8220 Bragg Blvd, Ft. Bragg, North Carolina 28310.
