Kelly Ammons Obituary

Kelly Mitchell Ammons of Greenville, NC, who lovingly went by the name ‟Mitch,”  went to rest in the Lord on December 16, 2021, at the age of 58. He was proceeded in death by his father, Kelly McPherson Ammons, Grandmothers, Aldora Maynor and Hattie Bell, Nephew, Scooter Ammons, and Aunt Jenny Stock.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 15 years, Gloria Ammons; daughters, Carson and Olivia, and mother, Bonnie Ammons of Fayetteville, NC; along with brothers, Stevie and Dwayne Ammons, brother, Todd Rogitz; sisters, Jill Rogitz and Teresa Ammons; aunt Ruby, and nephew/nieces Trey, Morgan, Meredith, Lauren, and Kelly.

Mitch completed his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Fayetteville State University, graduating Salutatorian of his class. He went on to work in management for ten years.  During that time, he found his first passion, martial arts, and trained in Virginia Beach under the Wing Chun lineage of Sifu Duncan Leung, who was trained by Ip Man, the same teacher who taught Bruce Lee.  Motivated to learn as much as possible, Mitch also learned Escrima and Tae Kwon Do in Fayetteville under Ms. Mayes, and Brazilian Jujitsu in Greenville. After learning so much, he opened his school, Unified Martial Arts, and for over 20 years dedicated himself to training and mentoring others in mixed martial arts.  Mitch also served National General Insurance for 23 years as a Senior Field Adjuster covering Bertie, Hertford, and Martin Counties.  He left a legacy of dependability and professionalism that impacted not only his peers and customers but many others throughout the community.

Mitch learned piano as a boy and often shared fun memories of his introduction to dance and his performance of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” in high school. One of his favorite pastimes was to sing and play music on banjo, guitar and piano. While connecting with friends who loved Latin dance, he was introduced to his one-in-a-million girl, Gloria, and made the best decision in his life to marry her! Mitch may have found his start as a “fighter,” but he became, in his own words, “a Lover and a Dancer.” Both parents shared their love of dancing with their beautiful daughter, Olivia.  Through his profession of faith, Mitch joined the Greenville Seventh-Day Adventist Church and was blessed to witness his daughters’ baptisms. He is remembered fondly for his charismatic charm, quick-witted humor, self-discipline, and bountiful love for his daughters Carson and Olivia.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to their daughter Olivia’s School Fund.
