Steven Eric Craun passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and devotion to family and friends. Born in Staunton, Virginia on June 23, 1990, Steve was the beloved son to Gary and Minday Craun, devoted husband to Chelsea, and a loving father to Riley Madison, Alexandra Kezia, Adam Matthias Craun, Grayson Ryan and Charles Leslie Coyle. He eagerly anticipated the arrival of his daughter, Sophia Juliette, whose life will be forever touched by the love he carried for her even before her birth.

He also leaves behind a maternal grandfather Stanley G. Murphy, of Staunton, Virginia, paternal grandparents, Robert L. and Nancy L. Craun of Mount Solon Virginia. Uncle Montgomery W. Murphy and wife Carole, Aunt Malissa M. Yoder and husband Karl and numerous cousins. He was proceeded in death by his maternal grandmother Betty C. Murphy.

Steve graduated from Fort Defiance High School in 2008 with an Advance Degree and held a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science.

Steve’s military career started in January 2017 as a Geospatial Intelligence Imagery analyst. He attended basic combat training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. After advanced individual training, he was assigned to Headquarters Company, 111th Military Intelligence Brigade, Fort Huachuca, Arizona until 2018. Sergeant Craun was then assigned to the U.S. Army Geospatial Intelligence Battalion at Fort Belvoir, Virginia where he served as an Imagery Sergeant until 2021. From 2021 to present he was assigned to the Joint Special Operations Command Intelligence Brigade, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Sergeant Steve Craun’s years in the United States Army were served with honor and commitment. While serving as a member of Joint Special Operations Command Intelligence Brigade, Sergeant Craun was instrumental in the success of multiple missions of national significance.

Sergeant Craun’s awards include the Joint Service Commendation Medal with “C’ Device, Joint Service Commendation Medal with “R” Device, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal, Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon - Numeral Two and Army Service Ribbon.

His strength, passion, and loyalty were evident not only in his military career but in every aspect of his life.

Steve’s presence was steady and kind, he led with quiet strength, an open heart, and a contagious smile. He found joy in the simple moments: playing with family and connecting to those he loved. His family was his greatest pride, and his memory will live on in their laughter, stories, and traditions. Steve also found joy in music, playing guitar and performing with his band “Atomfest.” From a very young age, there was not an instrument he could not play. He was equally passionate about fitness, especially CrossFit, where afternoon workouts and runs became a source of camaraderie and strength among close friends. Steve’s life was a testament to love, sacrifice, and the power of showing up for others. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A memorial service honoring Steve’s life and service will be held on Fort Bragg for fellow service members and family to gather in remembrance, paying tribute to Steve’s enduring legacy as a son, husband, father, and friend. The ceremony will reflect the deep love and respect he inspired in those around him, and offer space to celebrate the strength, kindness, and devotion that defined his life. A private burial service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date, where Steve will be laid to rest with the honors befitting his service and sacrifice.
