Rodney McKay, 74, of Fayetteville, transitioned from earth to eternity on May 3, 2026, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He was born on October 4, 1951, in Fayetteville, NC to the late Luther and Sadie McKay.
Upon graduation from E.E. Smith High School, Rodney answered the call to serve his country and joined the U.S. Coast Guard. Following his discharge from the Coast Guard, he returned to his hometown. Feeling the pull to serve the public, he served several years as a Fayetteville Police Officer before embarking upon his true calling as a firefighter with the Fayetteville Fire Department, where he served for 30 years.
He will be remembered for his love of fishing, enjoying his front porch, great conversations, his jovial laughter, and leisurely drives to take in the sights and sounds. He deeply loved his church family and the spiritual sounds of gospel music. Additionally, one could not overlook the fact that he was a devoted Philadelphia Eagles fan. Then, there were a couple of frenemies - Hardees and Bojangles.
Rodney's memory will forever be cherished by his loving wife of 51 years, Brenda, son, Travares McKay, daughters Tara (Cedric) Brooks, and Kara McKay. Grandchildren, Diamond McKay, Keundra Jackson, Heaven Abrams, and Kristopher King. Rodney's legacy continues through 6 great-grandchildren. He will also be remembered by one aunt, Joanna Adams, brothers-in-law, David Britton, Henry Britton (Etrula), William Britton (Donna), sisters-in-law, Phyllis McKoy (Leo), Connie Britton, and Laura Britton as well as a host of other relatives and dear friends.
He was predeceased by his grandson, SSG Terriquis Rodney McKay. Rodney, affectionally called “Papa” will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
