Major Steven V. Sosa (Retired) January 20, 1930 - December 19, 2025

Major Steven V. Sosa Sr., a devoted father, grandfather, soldier, and friend, passed away leaving behind a powerful legacy of service, honor, and love. He was born on January 20, 1930, in Artesia, New Mexico, to the late Florencio Sosa and Juana Villa.

Steven joined the United States military in 1948 and proudly served his country for more than two decades. His distinguished career included two tours in Korea and one tour in Vietnam, with assignments in Okinawa and the Philippines. A highly respected and honored Green Beret, he served in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th Special Forces Groups. He was also a proud member of the 82nd All American Airborne Division, where he earned his parachute wings and the esteemed title of Jumpmaster. Steven was a Purple Heart recipient, a testament to his bravery and sacrifice.

In addition, Steven was deeply connected to the 187th Infantry Regiment (Rakkasans), where he was a longtime member and proudly served as President of the 187 Rakkasans for a period of time. He retired from the military in 1970 with the rank of Major, but his service never truly ended. He remained actively involved in military functions and the Rakkasans Association for many years, continuing to support and honor his fellow servicemen.

In 1951, Steven married the love of his life, Betty Lou Hallmon, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with devotion and family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Lou Sosa; his cherished daughters, Gail Purgason, Linda Campbell, and Sandra Sosa; his parents; and four siblings.

He is survived by his sons, Steven Sosa Jr (Cindy) of Fayetteville and Michael Sosa (Steve) of California; his daughter, Shannon Von Hagel (James) of Maryland; his sister, Chris Baggett; his grandchildren, Katherine Sosa (Josh), Evan Campbell (Kayla), Jonathan Purgason (Megan), Vincent Purgason (Kaitlyn) and Tyler Von Hagel; and his beloved great-grandchildren Piper Purgason, Luke Purgason, Clive Purgason, and Milo Purgason. His family was his greatest pride and joy.

Beyond the military, Steven continued to live a full and active life. He studied and graduated from Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC), became a real estate broker, and later taught insurance classes, generously sharing his knowledge with others. He was known for his outgoing nature, welcoming spirit, and his ability to bring people together. Steven was often the heart of any gathering offering kindness, laughter, and genuine connection. Steven was always kind, warm, and welcoming. He was loved by all who knew him and had many friends who became family. He was greatly respected and honored not only for his service but for the integrity, generosity, and compassion he showed throughout his life.

Steven especially enjoyed golf and spending time in his garden, where he displayed a natural green thumb. Whether mentoring others, sharing stories, or enjoying the company of friends and family, he lived with purpose and heart.

Major Steven V. Sosa will be remembered not only for his military service but for his leadership and the man he was. He was truly a man amongst men. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the family he cherished, and the country he so proudly served.
