SFC Joseph Shaydak (Retired), a decorated combat veteran, dedicated public servant, and beloved uncle and friend, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family this past Sunday, September 13, 2026. He was 96 years old.

Born in Lysá, Czechoslovakia, on May 16, 1930, Joseph lived a life defined by extraordinary courage, resilience, and service to his country. Before immigrating to the United States and beginning his storied U.S. Army career, he proudly served in the French Foreign Legion.

He entered the United States Army on January 15, 1953, and served with unwavering distinction until his retirement on August 31, 1974. Over more than two decades of active-duty service, Joseph was a versatile and vital asset to his units. He served as an interrogator, a truckmaster, an interpreter, and in numerous other critical leadership roles. His military assignments included elite units such as Special Forces 3rd Group, the 75th Ranger Regiment, and the 82nd Airborne Division.

A true warrior, Joseph answered the call of duty across multiple historic eras and conflicts. He served during the Occupation of Germany after World War II, fought in the Korean War, and completed multiple combat tours in Vietnam, where he fought courageously in six separate campaigns, including the Tet Counteroffensive. His extraordinary acts of valor and dedicated service earned him some of the nation's highest military honors, including: The Soldier's Medal for Heroism, Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device- 4 Purple Hearts, The Air Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal.

Following his retirement from the military, Joseph continued his dedication to hard work and community, serving as a master steamfitter and plumber for Fort Bragg for 20 years.

Joseph shared many wonderful years with his beloved wife, Christel Shaydak, who preceded him in death on December 14, 2022. Together, they were longtime, devoted members of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fayetteville.
