Elizabeth Jean Benson, 81, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2026, at Valley Hospice House.
Elizabeth was born to the late Basil Hilburn and Ruby Ward. She was a hardworking woman who began her working life in the tobacco fields before spending 25 years as a cook at Green Manor Rest Home. Cooking was more than a job to Elizabeth—it was something she truly enjoyed, especially when preparing meals for her family during the holidays. Thanksgiving was particularly special to her, and she took great pride in bringing her loved ones together around the table.
Elizabeth had a love for the simple things in life. She enjoyed a cold Budweiser, watching racing, and was especially fond of Dale Earnhardt. But above all else, Elizabeth loved her family. Her greatest joy came from the time she spent with the people she loved, and she held a special place in her heart for her beloved dog, Booboo.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, Basil Hilburn and Ruby Ward; her brothers, John Hilburn and Bobby Blackburn; her sister, Doris West; and her daughter, Janet Furmage.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her son, James Furmage of Fayetteville, North Carolina; her daughter, Gina Benson of St. Pauls, North Carolina; her sister, Ann Schaeffer; her grandchildren, Justin Furmage, Chantel Cogdell, Courtney Lee, Jeremy Lee, Arianna Brown, Darrick Furmage, Kendall Benson, Breanna Benson, and Kyle Benson; and her great-grandchildren, Aniya Lee, Darris Grant, Elizabeth Lee, Kynlee Brown, Amina Fenwick, and Braxlee McGirt. She also enjoyed spending time with her grand pup, Cletus.
Elizabeth will be remembered for her hardworking spirit, her love of cooking, her enjoyment of racing and the simple pleasures in life, and most of all, for the love she gave so freely to her family. Her presence will be deeply missed, but the memories she created with those she loved will remain in their hearts forever.
