Dorothy L. Cummings

October 18, 1947 — February 28, 2026

Rowland

Dorothy Locklear Cummings of Rowland, North Carolina began her earthly life October 18, 1947 and began her transition into eternity on February 28th, 2026. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ashley and Sarah Locklear; a brother, Fennie Lloyd “Fuzzie” Locklear and a grandson, Andrew Cummings. She leaves behind to cherish her memories; her husband of 59 years, Cornelius Cummings, Sr.; Three sons, Cornelius Cummings, Jr, Michael Cummings and William Cummings, all of Rowland. Three grandchildren Christian Cummings (Brittany), Mary Cummings & Lydia Cummings; as well as 4 great-grandchildren. Her beloved sister, Tessie Locklear (Donald) of Maxton, Ted Locklear (Susan) of Rowland and Dane Locklear of Pembroke and Kristina Locklear-Cummings, mother of Lydia Cummings.

Dorothy began this life with humble beginnings on Timber Oak Drive often spending time between both her parents’ home and her grandmother’s, Ms. Mary Dial as they both lived on the dirt road. Going to school she developed a love of books and reading but she also met the love of her life, Cornelius. They began their married lives shortly after graduating high school and after starting a family, she and Cornelius decided that she had to develop her love of education further by attending college at Pembroke State University and graduating in 1975. She worked for the Public Schools of Robeson County, first as an English teacher and later she decided to further her education by attending North Carolina Central University. She graduated with her master’s degree in library sciences in 1989. Throughout her career she worked at Magnolia, Prospect, Union Elementary and retired from the Public Schools of Robeson County as a librarian at South Robeson High School. Not quite ready to stay at home full-time, she later returned as a substitute teacher working for several years with a variety of ages and populations.

Dorothy was an avid reader, enjoyed watching movies, had a wonderful green thumb and a love for baking and cooking. Dorothy expressed curiosity for innovative methods that enhanced everyday life and fearlessly embraced ingenuity when she encountered it. Known for having a soft kindness, she could also tell you the facts of a matter but with a gentle conviction that expressed her sincerity. Dorothy could enjoy a witty conversation and could execute a quick retort when the opportunity presented itself. She loved good adventures, traveling, and shopping.

There were two great joys in her life: her family and her service to Jesus. Family was always a priority taking care of her husband, children, parents, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She went above and beyond for everyone that she loved.

But her service to Jesus was to give her utmost for His highest. After Dorothy gave her life to Jesus, she felt the call to service. She served at Elrod Baptist Church as Sunday School Director, Sunday School Teacher, VBS Director and worked with the Easter Play for many years. At one point she was the Sunday school director for the Burnt Swamp Association. One of her personal ministries was to provide meals to families that were grieving, often walking into homes with “chicken and pastry”.

On February 28th, 2026, Dorothy’s race was complete. She was ushered into glory and met by King Jesus, what an honor and privilege made available by His grace and mercy. We cannot even fathom what she is experiencing in the presence of the Lord.
