SFC Daniel Mark Sweeney (US Army Retired), 66, passed away on May 19, 2026 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He was born April 17, 1960 in Berlin, New Hampshire to the late Donald Sweeney and Estelle Caron.

Daniel honorably served in the United States Army from 1976 to 1999. Following his retirement, he worked in the transportation industry at Salem Leasing, where he worked for over 20 years. He deeply loved his family and his career, and he showed his love by always taking care of those around him. Along with his family, he also greatly loved his dogs Ozzie, Otis, and Mimi. He was known by family and friends as a very stubborn but loving man, who was a leader and a provider. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and watching the Patriots.

During his service SFC Sweeney earned the following awards and decoration: Meritorious Service Medal (4th Award), Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (5th Award), Army Good Conduct Medal (6th Award), National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer’s Professional Development Medal with Numeral 3, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (3rd Award), Parachutist Badge, Driver and Mechanic Badge with Driver-M Bar, and Driver and Mechanic Badge with Driver-W Bar.

Daniel is survived by his loving wife, Kim Sweeney; son Donald Sweeney; daughters Michelle Fraker and Jennifer Newman; sisters Rose Long (Leo), Jennifer Blair (Greg), Angela Croteau (Ray), and Kathy Harvey (Steve); grandchildren Autum Guertin, Axel Fraker, Kaytlin Minnick, Beckham Sweeney, and Bennett Sweeney; nephews Declain Blair, Aidan Blair, David Long, and Michael Long; nieces Melissa Long and Miranda Becker; special friend/work son, Josh Stanley; and a host of extended family members and friends.

Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife Martha Sweeney.
