SGM Melvin Sledge, (Retired) passed away Friday May 12, 2017 in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center,

SGM Sledge was born in Atlanta, GA on August 13, 1944. He joined the US Army shortly after High School serving many tours of duty and was the first African American Male to make SGM while stationed at Fort Erwin, CA. He is preceded in death by his parents and a daughter.

SGM is survived by his wife, Jean Milton Sledge of the home; sons, Melvin Jr. and Termel, both of California; daughters, Sheron, Sherril and Sherelene and 11 grandchildren, all of California.

A Celebration of Life Service with Full Military Honors will be 3:00 pm Sunday, June 25, 2017 at LaFayette Funeral Home with Reverend Robert Staples officiating.
